Sexual harassment is any deliberate verbal or physical conduct that is unwelcome and/or uninvited. It has nothing to do with genuine mutual attraction or friendship relationships that may develop within the bowls club. It is also to do with unwelcome advances, comments or materials.
What is Bullying?
Bullying can occur whenever members are together. Under certain conditions, most people are capable of bullying. Bullying is not always intentional. Sometimes people do not realise that their behaviour can be harmful to others.
Bullying is repeated, unreasonable behaviour directed towards a member, or group of members, that creates a risk to health and safety.
Within this definition:
“unreasonable” means behaviour that a reasonable person, having regard to all the circumstances, would expect to victimise, humiliate, or undermine or threaten.
“behaviour” includes actions of individuals or a group, and may involve using a process as a means of victimising, humiliation, undermining or threatening.
“risk to health and safety” includes risk to the mental or physical health of the member.
Examples of unlawful harassment may include:
The reciting of sexist or racist jokes
Verbal or written abuse directed at a member or members (including visitors)
Pushing, Jostling, Shoving or assaulting another member or visitor (criminal offence in some instances)
Imitating or making fun of a member, visitor or person or a characteristic of a member, visitor or person
The use of unsuitable or offensive language within the bowls environment
Obscene telephone calls (criminal offence)
Unwelcome conversations about a member’s personal life
Initiating ceremonies or rituals
Spreading gossip or false rumours
Humiliating a fellow member/visitor through sarcasm, criticism and/or insults
Unnecessary familiarity and physical contact
Persistent requests for outings/drinks
Putting an arm around a co-member/visitor
Whistles and comments
Touching in a sexual way
Any member found guilty of perpetrating sexual harassment or bullying will be disciplined, and may, in appropriate cases be suspended and/or membership cancelled.
All allegations of sexual harassment and/or bullying are serious and will be treated as such by the Executive.
Any harassment or bullying claims are to be made in writing to the Executive Board.
